The collective vision of its founders, Albany features an unparalleled combination of surroundings, architecture, sporting amenities and service
Albany is a rare thing – a truly complete vision, especially for the yacht owner. All too often a marina will have a few second-rate apartments nearby, or a reasonable development will have an inadequate marina attached, in both cases with few other facilities. But Albany is different. And perhaps the reason is that its principal founder is a long-time yacht enthusiast with a bold vision. This is not just a property company development.
British entrepreneur Joe Lewis is well known in the yachting community and his vision was for somewhere that offered not just a place to visit or harbour a yacht, but somewhere to live a complete life. And he chose The Bahamas to bring that vision alive. As one of the most developed, sophisticated and accessible locations in the Caribbean, The Bahamas is a unique location and Albany occupies 600 of its pristine acres not far from Nassau.
The world-class marina is at the heart of the development and has been specially constructed with deep-water capacity for yachts at up to 300 feet – vessels which frequently have to moor offshore in other locations. Not surprisingly, Sunseeker yachts are amongst both the permanent residents and frequent visitors. As well as offering every conceivable service for owner, guest and crew, the marina is surrounded by award-winning architecture.
This includes The Honeycomb, designed by Bjarke Ingels Group, which contains stunning private residences.
But the marina is only the start. Recognising that sport was a key part of the mix, Joe Lewis brought in golfers Tiger Woods and Ernie Els to spearhead an extraordinary programme of sporting facilities. At the centre of Albany there is an 18-hole
championship course designed by Els and visiting sportsmen will also find training facilities, a fitness centre, 25-metre lap pool, dedicated CrossFit gym, boxing ring and classes for every fitness regime as well as equestrian and raquet centres.
For those who cannot leave their work behind, fully serviced offices by the marina can simply take a message or provide the facilities to run a complete offshore business. And specifically targeting those in the music industry, a professional recording studio, The Sanctuary, opened recently and is already attracting artists from all over the world.
In terms of leisure, Albany has a large spa offering multiple beauty and wellness therapies. A super-comfortable cinema, the Albany Theater, screens films daily, and with several Hollywood producers in residence, films often show the same day they premiere in London or LA.
And then there are the homes. Leading away from Albany House, a historic Bahamian manor and which is now the club house, you will find a spectacular variety of architecture all backed up with cleaning, catering and concierge services as required. And as a statement of commitment to home and family, there is even a state-of-the-art school, the Windsor High School at Albany, complete with its own golf, tennis and football sports academies. The tennis programme is overseen by former world champion Lleyton Hewitt, and the football is coordinated by Tottenham Hotspur, the British team that just happens to be owned by Joe Lewis… of course.
Albany is that kind of place – a true one-off.
