Blue and Sunseeker join forces to protect the seas around Menorca.
Menorca is a boating hotspot for good reason; read turquoise waters, dreamy isolated coves and gentle landscapes. But, like so many popular yachting destinations, its future looks uncertain, thanks to unregulated fishing and marine pollution.
Enter the Blue Marine Foundation, a charity on a mission to create marine-protected areas and establish methods of sustainable fishing around the world. The foundation has recently partnered up with Sunseeker to deliver a positive change in the Balearics with an exciting new programme – Project Menorca.
“The Blue Marine Foundation have a mission to protect 30 per cent of the oceans by 2030 and we want to be part of that,” explained Simon Clare, Marketing Director at Sunseeker International. “Working together, we really can make a difference.”
Project Menorca involves many initiatives, including the development of ‘eco moorings’ to protect seagrass beds, the removal of plastics and ‘ghost’ fishing nets from the water and the distribution of thousands of recyclable bags to local fishermongers. Alongside all of this, there will be a concerted effort to engage local fishers and mariners to encourage them to protect their marine environment.
“It’s hard to close down an entire area to fishing altogether but what you can do
is encourage sustainable fishing,” explained Rory Moore, Project Manager at BLUE. “This is a brilliant time for us to step in, helped by Sunseeker and its supporters.”
